The Belugas are winged weather balloons, which, through the use of embedded sensors, are aware of noise in their surroundings. Beluga comprises a group of three or four, 2-meter latex weather balloons inflated with either Helium or air. They are equipped with three clear acrylic carriages. One slung underneath the balloon carries an Arduino microprocessor and microphone. The two other carriages hold servos, which control small wings. The Beluga are designed to behave and react in specific ways; through the use of embedded sensors the Beluga are sensitive to noise in their surroundings, they flicker with light and their wings flap frantically in response to noise. When they are floating this propels them in a nearly impossible effort to move towards noise.
